About Fibers, Part 9: Spinning

This time, we'll be discussing "spinning."
Regarding "staple fibers," one of the fiber classifications introduced in Part 1 of our series on fibers, they cannot be made into yarn without going through the spinning process.

This time, we will introduce the general spinning process.
1. "Blending and Compressing"
This process is to first loosen the compressed cotton.
Cotton and wool sometimes contain debris, so this process removes the debris.
Also, when creating blended yarn, the cotton is mixed in this process.
The mixed cotton is bundled into a sheet called a "wrap" and proceeds to the next process.
2. "Combing or Carding"
The finished wrap has fibers that are loosely tangled and facing in different directions, so it is combed to align the fibers.
At the same time, any fine debris that was not removed in the blending and compression process is removed.
The fibers, which have been aligned in a consistent direction, are bundled into a thick string called a "sliver." (Although it's called a string, it's simply bundled together, so it's very easy to cut.)
3. "Drawn Sliver"
Multiple strands of the finished sliver are bundled together and stretched.
Bundling multiple strands of sliver reduces yarn unevenness and creates a more uniform drawn sliver.
4. "Roving"
At this stage, the drawn sliver is twisted for the first time. It's twisted while being stretched thinly to create yarn that can be fed into the spinning machine.
The finished product is called "roving yarn."
5. "Spinning"
The roving yarn is further stretched thinly and twisted to achieve the specified thickness.
This completes the spun yarn.
6. "Rewinding"
Since the yarn that has gone through the spinning machine is wound on bobbins, it is rewinded onto cheeses or cones for easier use before shipment.
The above is a general overview of the spinning process.
High-quality yarns and cotton (men) sometimes undergo a combing process between carding and refining. This process removes extremely fine debris and further aligns the fiber direction, resulting in a very fine yarn.
